Depicting hawthorn blossom growing and entwined around a human hand. The hand symbol is something I always return to in my work as a representation of humanity and being.
'Huath' is a letter from the early Irish Ogham alphabet that is also associated with the Hawthorn. It holds a long history in Irish folklore, and is known as the Fairy Tree, a gateway form this to the Otherworld.
The word Huath can also translate as 'fear', which may have some connection to how it was considered bad luck to damage or cut down a hawthorn tree, raising the ire of the fae. Even roads in Ireland have been rerouted to avoid cutting down a Hawthorn.
In addition to its mystical associations, the Hawthorn has medicinal properties in traditional Irish herbalism. The leaves, flowers, and berries of the Hawthorn tree have been used for centuries to support heart health and promote emotional well-being. It is considered a sacred and potent herb, known for its ability to calm the mind and heal the spirit.
May blossom from the Hawthorn is one of the wonders of Spring in the UK and Ireland. With such rich history and folklore associated with it, it is truly a magical tree in flower.
