A blackthorn blossom linoprint, printed on 280 gsm Fabriano Rosaspina paper, in oil based ink. Printed as an open edition so the print is not numbered.
Elder is viewed in folklore as being a protective tree. It was auspicious if it was growing near one's dwelling, especially if it had seeded itself there.The scent of the white elder flowers was said to poison anyone foolish enough to fall asleep beneath the tree. Sitting under, or more riskily sleeping under, an elder at midsummer was said to enable one to see the faeries, or even see them going to their midsummer feast. In Ireland, witches were thought to use elder boughs as magic horses.
The frothy blossom is gathered in June to make delicious elderflower cordial.
Dimensions approx: 14.5 cms x 18.5 cms
