CASE STUDY
Cocoon Home Designs
I was lucky enough to be asked to create pattern designs for Cocoon Home as part of their home furnishing collections over two seasons.
The company wanted to work with artists that specifically use the technique of linocut and woodcut which was part of the collection's aesthetic.
I was given a loose brief of animal imagery, nature, and mythical creatures to start and after sketching out a series of designs, we selected the themes of Aesop's Fables, a mythological Peryton with dandelions, and florals with bees.
Each design was hand drawn and then made into a repeat. This was all created by hand using paper and retracing. The pattern repeats were then scanned in and checked by the design company, final adjustments were made, and I began the process of transfering the repeat to the block.
The final prints of 'King Peryton' -featuring the mythical Peryton and king of the weeds the dandelion, 'Aesop's Fables'- featuring the heron, fox and hare with wisteria vines, and 'Nasency'-with anemones, butterflies and bees were sent to Cocoon Home to be scanned.
Colourways were discussed and agreed upon, with a variety of colour combinations chosen for each design. The repeats were then digitally printed onto fabric and wallpapers
Final fabric prints and carved blocks
Each block was very large so as to be able to include fine detail, with only a section of the repeat being carved. The lino blocks were printed by hand on my press.
