It holds a long history in Irish folklore, and is known as the Fairy Tree, a gateway form this to the Otherworld.

The word Huath can also translate as 'fear', which may have some connection to how it was considered bad luck to damage or cut down a hawthorn tree, raising the ire of the fae. Even roads in Ireland have been rerouted to avoid cutting down a Hawthorn.

In addition to its mystical associations, the Hawthorn has medicinal properties in traditional Irish herbalism.
